THE INSTRUMENT:

The KALIMBA is a traditional African lamellophone, often described as a thumb piano.

Its sound is produced by plucking tuned metal tines fixed to a wooden resonating body.

KALIMBA belongs to a much wider family of African instruments that includes Mbira, Sansi, Likembe and Kisanji.

These instruments have been played for centuries across large areas of sub-Saharan Africa.

Important traditions can be found in Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In many cultures, these instruments are connected not only to music and entertainment, but also to ceremonies, storytelling and spiritual practices.

Its warm, bell-like and highly percussive sound soon attracted musicians all over the world.

One of its most famous users was Maurice White of Earth, Wind & Fire, who featured the Kalimba prominently in his music, including the track “Kalimba Story.”

Today, the Kalimba can be heard in world music, jazz, funk, ambient, electronic music, film scores and pop.

Melodic and percussive at the same time, its unique tonal character makes it an especially fascinating instrument to sample.

BEATOOLS MISSION:

The mission behind this 3GB KALIMBA Sample Toolbox is simple: to give producers and performers a complete, expressive and highly playable collection of sounds created exclusively from this extraordinary instrument.

Every single note of the kalimba was carefully sampled in great detail, capturing 4 dynamic layers with 3 different samples for each layer. This approach adds natural variation to repeated notes and makes every performance feel more organic, alive and realistic.

Rather than creating just another sample pack, we wanted to build a true musical toolbox, an instrument that can be played, performed and integrated naturally into your own productions.

To make the KALIMBA Toolbox immediately usable in different workflows, dedicated instruments are provided for Ableton Live, Native Instruments Kontakt and Akai MPC (2 and 3), alongside the original samples.
