HISTORY:

An audio oscillator is an instrument that generates one pure tone or frequency at a time. Through the years, HP oscillators were used to design, produce and maintain telephones, stereos, radios and other audio equipment.

The Model 200CD was introduced in 1952.

The wide frequency coverage made this instrument very valuable as a general purpose oscillator.

The 200CD was used for testing servo and vibration systems, medical and geophysical equipment, audio amplifiers, sonar and supersonic apparatus, carrier telephone systems and video frequency circuits.

This unit was used as a testing instrument at the Farfisa factory in Camerano (Ancona, Italy).

BEATOOLS MISSION:

This Mini Sample Toolbox was born from a moment of pure fascination.

During our visit to the studio of the Museo del Synth Marchigiano, we encountered a 1952 Hewlett-Packard WRO 200 CD oscillator, a scientific measuring instrument never intended for music. What struck us immediately was the body, depth, and unmistakable quality of its audio signal: solid, elegant, and alive in a way that modern tools rarely achieve.

That experience inspired us to do one simple, radical thing:

create an entire Sample Toolbox using only the sound generated by this vintage oscillator.

Our mission with this release is to make the extraordinary character of this historic instrument available to producers everywhere, across multiple platforms, without losing its original charm. The sound has been carefully captured and translated into playable tools for modern workflows, resulting in an Ableton Instrument, a Kontakt Instrument, a Battery Patch, and an Akai MPC Live program.

This is not about nostalgia.

It’s about preserving and sharing a sound that was never meant to make music, yet does so with astonishing authority.

By bridging vintage hardware and contemporary production environments, Beatools continues its mission: turning rare, overlooked machines into inspiring creative tools, while honoring their identity, history, and unmistakable sonic soul.
