HISTORY:

Manufactured in Japan by Sakata Shokai Ltd in late 1983, this obscure unit was released under two different names: the Nihon-Hammond DPM-48 for the UK market, and the Jugg Box DPM-48 in Japan. The acronym DPM stands for Digital Percussion Machine.

Only around 2,000 units were ever produced, making it one of the rarest drum machines of its era.

The DPM-48 features 22 digitally recorded drum and percussion sounds, including: 4 Tom-toms; 3 Bass drums; 3 Snare drums; Open, Closed, and Accented Hi-hats; 2 Ride cymbals; 1 Crash Cymbal; 2 Cabasa variations; 2 Agogo tones; 1 Rimshot; 1 Hand Clap.

Despite its rich set of sounds and quirky charm, the DPM-48 remained virtually unknown for decades, overshadowed by more famous contemporaries. It never made it into the mainstream and has no confirmed use in major albums, yet its tone tells a story of early digital rhythm experimentation.
